Rukhsana Sultana Biography

Rukhsana Sultana was a political socialite of Sanjay Gandhi, a member of Nehru family in the 1970s. She was a close associate of Sanjay during the emergency period and the only female member of the group. Most of her activities with Sanjay were during 1975-1977, and as his staunch supporter she participated in many of his social activities including sterilisation campaign in Muslim areas of Old Delhi, for which she has received many criticism. She was also accused of bullying others for her social activities, as instructed by Sanjay during emergency period. Noted Bollywood actress Amrita Singh is her daughter, who was formerly married to Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. Rukhsana’s granddaughter Sara Ali Khan is now a leading actress of Bollywood.

 

Rukhsana Sultana was born in Jalandhar, Punjab as the daughter of Sadna Sult and Mohan Bimbet. Her real name is Meenu Bimbet. Army general Shivinder Singh Virk was her husband, with whom she separated later. The couple had one beautiful daughter Amrita Singh who married Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan in 1991. However she also legally separated from Saif in the early 2000s. Yesterday star Begam Para was her aunt, who was married to Dilip Kumar’s younger brother Nasir Khan who has also played brief roles on Bollywood screen in the 1960s. She was a cousin of Bollywood actor Ayub Khan.

 

She turned a socialite in the 1970s after her marriage and when Amrita Singh was in her teens. She rose to prominence very quickly and came to be known as the glamour girl during emergency period. There was a time when everyone needs to seek her permission to visit Sanjay Gandhi. She was so influential to change his decisions as well. Post the end of Sanjay era, she also lost her socialite status.
