Roopa Ganguly Biography

Roopa Ganguly is an Indian actress and playback singer. She works for movies as well as television serials. She is most known for her role as Draupadhi (Panchali) in B.R.Chopra’s television serial on Doordarshan, Mahabharata, telecasted during late 80’s. She is a National award winning playback singer also. She won it most recently in 2012 for Abosheshey (Bengali). She is a popular Bengali actress also. Her career in Bollywood has been not as successful as Mahabharatha. Padma Nadir Majhi (1993) by Gautam Ghose, Yugant (1995) by Aparna Sen, and Antarmahal (2006) by Rituparno Ghosh are her most memorable Bengali movies. She has worked opposite super star Dr. Vishnuvardhan in two films Inspector Dhanush (Hindi) and Police Mathu Daada (Kannada).


Apart from Mahabharata, she has also acted in serials like Sukanya, Karan apna apna, Chandrakantha, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, Kasthuri, Love story and Waqt Batayega Kaun Apna Kaun Paraya. She has also appeared in concluding episode of Sach ka samna, as contestant and even revealed the truth that she was in love with someone when shooting of Mahabharata was going on. She was already married that time. She even said that she still loves her ex-husband despite being parted. She was seen emotional throughout the program.


Roopa Ganguly was born in Kalyani near Kolkata, West Bengal. She passed her Madhyamik Exam from Beltala Girls' High School and graduated from the Jogamaya Devi College. Ganguly married Dhrubo Mukerjee in 1992 and the marriage broke in 2006. Later she had a living together relationship with Dibyendu who was 13 years younger than her. Unfortunately they too split.


Roopa entered Bollywood through Saaheb in 1985 opposite Anil Kapoor. Her second movie was in Malayalam, opposite Mammooty - Ithile Iniyum Varu (1986). She has also played lead role in Mrinal Sen's, Ek Din Achanak (1989). The hit song, kaali teri choti hai was pictured on her. But she later shifted to Kolkata and concentrated on Bengali movies that brought her wide appreciation too. Later she returned back to television as well, which proved successful. Most recently she has appeared in Barfi, Hemlock Society, Na Hannyate, Namte Namte and Half Serious.
