Rohinton Mistry Biography

Rohinton Mistry is a Canadian writer in English, born in Mumbai, India. Currently he resides in Brampton, Ontario, Canada and belongs to the Parsi community. Mistry received Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 2012. He writes on historical fiction most and Such a Long Journey, Family Matters and A Fine Balance are his noted works which got numerous international awards.

Mistry was born and brought up in Mumbai. He completed graduation in in Mathematics and Economics from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. In 1975 he moved to Toronto with his wife. He took graduation in English and Philosophy from University of Toronto. He worked in a bank for a short while and resumed with his studies. During this time, for his published books, Hart House Review, and Canadian Fiction Magazine he won two Hart House literary prizes in the consecutive years, 1983 and 1984. In 1987 he published his collection of 11 short stories, Tales from Firozsha Baag. Later the same book was published in US titled ‘Swimming Lessons and Other Stories from Firozsha Baag’.

His second book, Such a Long Journey, was published in 1991. It won the Governor General's Award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book, and the W.H. Smith/Books in Canada First Novel Award. Same book was shortlisted at Booker Prize and the Trillium Award and has been translated to several languages. His third book, A Fine Balance (1995), won the second annual Giller Prize in 1995 and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction in 1996. His novel Family matters was published in 2002. This work is a consideration of the difficulties that come with aging. Later he has published two short story collections - Searching for Stevenson (1994) and The Scream (2006).
