Roger Binny Biography

Roger Binny is a former legendary cricketer and bowler of India. He is best remembered for his outstanding performance as a bowler in 1983 World Cup, where he was the highest wicket-taker, taking 18 wickets thus playing a significant role for team India in winning the World cup for the first time. The 1985 World Series Cricket Championship in Australia where he took 17 wickets is the second most noticed match of this legendary cricketer. He played 27 tests and 72 ODIs for India and was known as an all-runder. His son Stuart Binny has most recently found place in ODI team for India and has played two matches. He is a regular performer as an all-rounder for IPL series too. Noted sports channel host, Mayanti Langer is his daughter-in-law.

 

Binny made his test debut in 1979 against Pakistan. He played in his home ground, the KSCA Stadium in Bangalore in the first Test against Pakistan. He scored 46 runs as a batsman in his maiden match. He is best remembered for a six scored against a bouncer by Imran Khan in the last test of the series. As a swing bowler and fine fielder, his maiden test series cemented his position in Indian team. Later he played 27 tests and 72 ODIs for India, taking 47 and 77 wickets each till his retirement in 1987. He also scored 830 and 629 runs each.

 

He was the first Anglo-Indian to play for Indian cricket team. He made his test debut opposite Pakistan and played his last match in 1987 against the same team. His first and last ODI matches were against team Australia. He was one among the magic three, others being Kapil Dev and Madan Lal who played a significant role in pace attack in 1983 World Cup. He also got the title of the highest wicket taker.
