Ritwik Ghatak Biography

Ritwik Ghatak was a producer and director of Bengali movies. His scripts were too, equally successful. He is always regarded as one of the greatest names of Bengali cinema. His works are compared with contemporary Bengali filmmakers Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen.  He has received National Film Award's Rajat Kamal Award for Best Story in 1974 for his movie - Jukti Takko Aar Gappo. He has also received Best Director's Award from Bangladesh Cine Journalist's Association for Titash Ekti Nadir Naam. He received Padmashri in the year 1970 for his contributions to parallel cinema. His contribution to Bollywood is the script of Madhumathi, the first Bollywood cinema based on incarnation and numerous movies have been plotted with the same idea, Om Shanti Om, directly lifting its climax from the original. The movie was directed by Bimal Roy for which Ritwik won a Filmfare nomination.

 

Ritwik’s father, Suresh Chandra Ghatak was a poet and playwright. He was the district magistrate as well. His mother was Indubala Devi. After partition of Bengal in 1947, his family moved to Kolkata. His marriage with Surama Devi resulted in a divorce and it mentally disturbed Ritwik as well. Ritwik was temporarily sent to a mental hospital. This couple had three children of which Ritaban is a film maker at present.

 

Ritwik wrote his first play, Kalo sayar in the year 1948. In 1951, Ghatak joined the Indian People's Theatre Association where he scripted, directed and acted in many plays. His last play was ‘Jwala’ written in the early 70’s. His entry to films happened through Nimai Ghosh's Chinnamul (1950) as actor and assistant director. It was followed by Nagarik in 1952 and these two movies are regarded as the breakthrough movies of Bengali cinema. Ghatak's first commercial release was a comedy drama, Ajantrik (1958).  Till then, he directed 8 filmsamong which Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar, Subarnarekha and Komal Gandhar need special mention.
