Ritu Kumar is one of the greatest and successful names of Indian fashion industry. She is one of India’s foremost fashion designer, and the first woman to introduce the ‘boutique’ culture in India under the brand name ‘Ritu’. She crafted costumes in the ancient traditions of Indian craftsmanship using a contemporary vocabulary. She had a better understanding of old traditional designs and successfully implemented in modern style. Ritu Kumar’s outfits have also been patronized by style icons such as Late Princess Diana and Jemima Khan. Ritu Kumar has been awarded the Padma Shri Award in the year 2013 for her contributions to Indian fashion industry. She has also received Lifetime Achievement Award from many leading brands like Kingfisher, National Institute of Fashion Technology and L’oreal Paris Femina Women’s Awards. She has also been honoured with Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award for her achievements and contribution in the field of fashion.

 

Ritu Kumar as a brand is famous worldwide and its patrons include leading Indian heroines and fashion queens like Vidya Balan, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza to international celebrities such as the Mischa Barton, Anoushka Shankar and Anna Ivanovic. Her costumes have been frequently used by models to participate in Miss India, Miss World, Miss Universe and other international beauty pageants also.

 

Ritu Kumar was born on 11 November 1944 in Amritsar, Punjab. After graduation in Delhi, her higher education was from Briarcliff College, New York. She began her career in 1969 with just four hand block printers and two tables in a small village near Kolkata. Now Ritu has grown as an international brand with nearly 35 stores in India. She redefined Indian fashion in her words by blending it nicely with traditional values and contemporary styles. She has been a strong force in marketing ancient skills to a dynamic modern India. She has been conferred with "Chevalier des arts et des lettres” by the French government.
