Rita Koiral Biography

Rita Koiral was a popular Bengali actress, who worked in films and television. A familiar face in TV serials and films, her performance in Bengali films such as Asukh (1999) by Rituparno Ghosh, Paromitar Ekdin (2008) by Aparna Sen and Dutta Vs Dutta (2012) by Anjan Dutt were well appreciated in the recent times. She was quite regular in TV soaps too, when death took her away in the form of cancer at the age of only 58. She passed away on 19 November 2017. Apart from films and TV shows, she has also been associated with jatra, a form of folk theatre. She was quite popular for her negative mother-in-law roles in television, and frequently shared screen space with Monami Ghosh.

Rita was born in the year 1959. She became quite active in film scene since 1990s, and also worked as a dubbing artist at that time. Atmaja (1996) was one of her early releases. Though she worked in films, she came to prominence through the negative roles she played on small screen. She was quite active and at her career peak, when she passed away in 2017. Rakhi Bandhan, Kon Se Alor Swapno Niye, Mouchaak, Stree etc are some of her best television works. Koiral ran a school of dance. She continued with acting even after diagnosed with liver cancer.

In 2017 a controversy happened to related to the dubbing of National award winning film, Bariwali (2000) directed by Rituparno Ghosh. The national award for best actress was received by Kirron Kher for the lead role she played in the film, who claimed to dub for her role as well. Later Koiral dropped a bomb stating that she dubbed for Kher in the film, including the weeping scenes, where she used glycerin while dubbing. Throughout her life she nursed the wound that she was not given the much deserved credit or remuneration for dubbing the role.
