Rita (indian Singer) Biography

Rita is a south Indian playback singer who works in all south Indian languages. She is an established singer in Tamil cinema, who owns many chartbuster hits to her credit. She is also a graphic designer and visualizer. She is the co-founder of a design studio of integrated freelance professionals called Utopik. She has recorded over 300 songs and jingles in all major South Indian languages. The song "Vada Mapillai" in Villu was her first major break and “Allegra" and "Mambo mamiyaa" for Kandasamy brought her to main league of female playback singers. She has sung for music composers - Ilaiyaraaja, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Mani Sharma, D. Imman, Vidyasagar, Devi Sri Prasad, M. Jeychandran, and M. M. Keeravani.

 

She is also known as Rita Thyagarajan. Her real name is Sucharitha Thyagarajan, best known as Rita. She was born in Chennai on 10 June 1984. She started learning classic music at early childhood since the age of 5. Her mother Lalitha Thyagarajan is a veteran illustrator and artist in Chennai. She is a veena player too. Her sister is a trained Carnatic singer. After starting Carnatic music at a younger age, she learnt Hindustani music later. During her college styles, she explored different styles of singing and different kinds of music, apart from traditional Indian classical music.

 

Her first break to film industry was given by Imman for the movie, Aanai, where she sang the track - Yendan Varungaala Veetukaaranae. Later she got opportunity to work with almost all leading music composers of south Indian film industry. She made ears perk up to her ‘Allegra' and ‘Mambo Maamiya' in Kandaswamy. There was no turning point after that.  She was nominated for the Filmfare Award for the song "Allegra”. "Vada Mapillai" is yet another popular song of Rita in Tamil. She recorded songs in other south Indian language movies too.
