Revathi Sankaran Biography

Revathi Sankaran is a noted television personality and a Harikatha exponent from Tamil Nadu. She scripted and produced many radio dramas and short films. Apart from her role as a voice actor, she has also sung one song of a television serial. A multifaceted personality she is also a recipient of Kalaimamani award in the year 2010 given by Government of Tamil Nadu for her contributions to Indian art. She has modeled for TV commercials, the notable one being the role of a nun who munches a chocolate bar.

Director K. Balachander called her ‘His find’ and has featured her in a series of his television serials like - Anni, Kasalavu Nesam, Kadhal Vangi Vandhen and Adutha Veettu Kavidhai. As a television celebrity, she has handled various roles like the translations, the editorship, the TV serials and programs with ease. A harikatha exponent, she is known for her transforming characters like Sakku Bai. She has also performed a harikatha on the life of M.S. Subbulakshmi, in her presence on her 83rd birthday. She writes, sings and dances for her performances.

She belongs to Thiruvaroor village of Deepangudi, Tamil Nadu in a music loving family. She has two brothers. Her grandmother, a close friend of M S Subbulakshmi has been her true inspiration who prompted her to shift to Madhurai. Thus she moved to Madhurai where her grandfather was working. She learnt Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music, Devaram and Thiruvasagam while staying with her grandparents there. Though she loved singing she didn’t want to take it as profession. She just enjoyed singing.

Then to Hyderabad and finally to Chennai she moved along with his husband, who was working as a senior executive. She applied for compeering, for Out Of Vision (OOV) for Doordarshan and that’s how she started her television journey. 'Ula Varum Oli Kadhir' – a religious show was one of her earliest works. She worked in documentaries for United Nations – CARE. She later started Harikatha in an elderly home.
