Rehana Sultan Biography

Rehana Sultan is one of the rule-breaking actresses of Bollywood. Though she acted only in a few movies and her career ended soon before it started off, she was able to accumulate a National award for best actress in the year 1970 for the leading role she played in Hindi movie, Dastak. She was the second female to win it from Bollywood, following Nargis and the fourth one in the consolidated list of award winners. Dastak of 1970 happened to be her debut movie as well. She was often tagged as a ‘sexy actress’ of 1970’s and many of her bold film posters have invited lot of controversies at a time when ladies of B’town were not so modern as they are now. She is still remarked as a trailblazing actress by many people who came after her. She is also known for another bold role in the film Chetna (1970). But it resulted in typecasting her as a bold actress, eventually ending up her career though she made a promising debut.

Rehana was born on November 19, 1950 in Ahmadabad. She graduated from the High School in 1967 and very soon got selected to Film and Television Institute of India in Pune where she joined to learn acting. She got a brief sexy role in Shadi Ki Pehli Salgirah (1967). But Dastak of 1970 marked her real debut in movies, which gave her a National award as well. Rajinder Singh Bedi was its director and thus she became the first lady of B’town to enter film industry after completing acting course from an institute. She played the role of a young wife in Dastak while she played the role of a prostitute in the movie, Chetana released in the same year. The movie was shot in 28 days and it dealt with rehabilitation of prostitutes, one of the earliest Hindi movies of this subject.

Later she appeared in a few movies like Haar Jeet (1972), Prem Parvat (1973), Kissa Kursi Ka (1977) and Hum Rahen Na Rahen (1984). She got married to B. R. Ishara, director of her second movie Chetana and settled with her family life. Later she appeared in a few television shows.
