Ravikant Nagaich Biography

Ravikant Nagaich was a noted cinematographer and film director associated with Bollywood as well as south Indian movies. He is best remembered as the director of Bollywood mega blockbuster Farz released in 1967. This spy thriller released under the banner Vijaya Lakhshmi Pictures was regarded as a trendsetter of Bollywood and popular for its dance sequences till now. The movie also established Jeetendra as the new sensation of Bollywood. Babita played the female lead and its songs were also extremely popular. This low-budget thriller inspired by James Bond was one of the first films made on Indian screen of this kind. He has also directed one more successful movie with Jeetendra - Jigri Dost in 1969.

He has also casted India’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna in two of his major hits – Mere Jeevan Saathi (1972) and The Train (1970). Both these movies were released during the peak of Rajesh Khanna’s stardom and still remembered for its evergreen tunes. He has directed around 25 movies and produced two Bollywood films - Wardaat and Shapath, both in the 1980s. Kala Sona, Rani Aur Lalpari, Surakshaa and Laparwah are other noted Bollywood films as a film director. He was settled in Chennai during his last years.

He was born in Atrauli of Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh on 5 July 1931. He started his filming career as a cinematographer in Telugu films. Sri Seetha Rama Kalyanam in 1961 was his debut movie. Later he worked in both Bollywood and Telugu films as a cinematographer and director. A cinematographer turned director, Farz was his debut movie as a film director. Goodachari 116 (1967) was his debut Telugu film as a director. He is known for making low budget spy movies like - Farz, Keemat and Raksha, which fared well at box office too. Duty in 1986 was his last movie as a director.
