Ravi Chaturvedi Biography

Ravi Chaturvedi is a former sports commentator has also been associated with all leading sports channels of India, apart from Doordarshan & AIR. He has worked with Star Sports, ESPN, TWI, Nimbus Sports, Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, Guardian Radio, Trinidad TV, BBC, Voice of America, World Tel. New Zealand TV etc. He has also authored 23 books on cricket. Ravi is the first sports commentator in Hindi belonging to Indian media and telecommunications. For his contributions towards the field of sports, especially cricket and also television, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010.

 

Ravi Chaturvedi was born on 27 July 1937 in Kanpur district, UP. He was born in Dilip Nagar village. After studies he started his profession as a lecturer and he taught Zoology at Zakir Husain Delhi College, University of Delhi for 4 decades. When government of India started sports coverage with commentary for AIR in 1960, Ravi joined as Hindi commentator in the year 1962. He mainly covered cricket in his illustrious career of many decades and worked as a commentator for 102 Tests and 220 ODIs. He also authored several books related to cricket, and worked for different TV channels.

 

Apart from cricket, he has also covered other sporting events. Yet cricket remains his most favourite game. He also tried to promote cricket in other countries, through his writings. Apart from Padma Shri, he has received the honours such as Kanpur Ratna, Manju Shri Award and Outstanding Commentator (Delhi). He was based in Delhi during his professional years. Apart from his job as a cricket commentator, he also worked as a freelancer journalist. He authored 15 books in English and 8 in Hindi.
