Rathika Ramasamy Biography

Rathika Ramasamy is an Indian wildlife photographer based in Delhi. She works as a freelancer, and is hailed as the first Indian woman wildlife photographer to strike an international reputation in this field. Rathika hails from Theni, Tamil Nadu, and currently based in capital city busy with her professional life. Her wildlife photography has been featured in many campaigns and exhibited at wildlife exhibitions. She also conducts workshops on wildlife photography.

Rathika Ramasamy was born in Venkatachalapuram of Theni, Tamil Nadu. After marriage she got settled in Delhi in 1999. She took graduation in computer engineering and also completed an MBA, and worked as a software engineering for several years. After her graduation she did not want an office job. As software engineers were quite common, she didn’t want to opt it as profession. But wildlife photography was not everybody’s cup of coffee, and that’s the reason behind why she turned a photographer.

As a kid she liked to capture family picnics on the camera that her father had gifted her. During her teens, she took this habit seriously and got drawn towards this art. She was among a crowd of software engineers in Chennai who celebrated their graduation in the late nineties, and later she completed MBA as well. Yet she finally chose wildlife photography as her profession. She received support from her family, and she took off with the new venture. The ‘bird woman’ has great love towards birds.

Birds were her first love, and their colours and movements during migration attracted her most. But the pictures she captured first with her new digital camera were too dark and had the wrong angles. She taught herself the technical skills to become a photographer, and upgraded herself. She became a regular visitor to the numerous National parks around Delhi, alongside the National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary, Corbett Tiger Reserve and many other protected areas. By then, she had totally fallen in love with wildlife and never looked back since. Her wildlife photography was featured at the "Clean Ganga Campaign" held at India International Center, New Delhi in 2005.
