Ratanji Tata Biography

Ratanji Tata was an Indian financier and philanthropist who lived during the period, 20 January 1871 – 5 September 1918. He is a member of illustrious Tata business family. Born as the son of pioneer industrialist Jamsetji Tata, Ratanji also established a name of his own. Famous industrialists and businessmen - Dorabji Tata and Ratan Tata are his siblings. Ratanji Tata died young at the age of 47. After his death the Sir Ratan Tata Trust was founded in 1919. He was a cousin of Shapurji Saklatvala, a British politician and Communist leader.

 

Ratanji Tata was born into an industrialist family in Mumbai on 20 January 1871 as the son of Jamsetji Tata and Hirabai. He studied at St. Xavier's College before joining family business. On the death of the elder Tata in 1904, the siblings inherited a huge fortune, with which they established many industries, and also donated a big amount for their philanthropic activities. (Indian Institute of Science, IISc was founded in 1905 and Tata Steel at Sakchi in 1912.

 

He was a great connoisseur of arts and an art collector. Some of his collections were acquired and displayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya later. His art collections were acquired in 1923, and after 10 years, two other sections that of Sir Dorab Tata. Also known as financier and philanthropist, he established a Ratan Tata Fund at the University of London for studying the conditions of the poorer classes.

 

He married Navajbai Sett in 1893 and left for England in 1915. They adopted, Naval Tata, a distant relative. He died on 5 September 1918 at St Ives in Cornwall, England. He was buried by the side of his father at Brookwood Cemetery, Woking. He was only 47 when he passed away.
