Rashid Khan Biography

Ustad Rashid Khan is an Indian classical musician who belongs to the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana. He is the great-grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan, founder of this traditional of Hindustani music. Once, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has commented that Rashid Khan is the assurance of the future of Indian vocal music. Most recently in 2013 Indian government honoured him with Padma Bhushan. He is also a recipient of Padma Shri, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. He has sung for a few Bollywood movies like Jab we met and Mausam. "Aaoge Jab Tum" of Jab we met is one of his most noticed songs.

He was born on July 1, 1966 in Badayun of UP. Since childhood he was interested in music. He received his initial training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan is his uncle who noticed the singing talents of his nephew. After initial training, he also learnt from Mumbai. But it was under the training of his grand-uncle Nissar Hussain Khan in which he became an expert. Learning was strict and often, he was given practice of a single note the whole day from morning to evening. This disciplined training shows in his easy mastery of taan and layakaari in his concerts even today.

He gave his first concert in 1977 at the age of 11. Next year he performed at an ITC concert in Delhi. He joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy at Kolkata at the age of 14. By 1994, he was acknowledged as a musician at the academy. He is influenced with the style of Ustad Amir Khan and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in the singing style.
