Rash Behari Bose Biography

Rash Behari Bose was a revolutionary leader from Bengal who fought against British. He was one of the key organisers of the Ghadar Revolution. He was also the founder president of Indian National Army. Once Subhash Chandra Bose remarked that "He was the father of the Indian independence movement in East Asia." He had good educational qualification. He studied abroad to earn both medical science and engineering degrees. Rash scripted the 1912 bomb attack on the Viceroy, Lord Hardinge who was to enter the newly shifted Indian capital to Delhi and got the mission executed through Basant Kumar on 23 December 1912 in Delhi. He was a clerk at Forest Research Institute, Dehradun who took 37-day leave to script the attack. It took two years of long investigation by British to know the mastermind of the attack on the Viceroy.

Rash Behari was born on 25 May, 1886, in Palara-Bighati of Hoogly, West Bengal. He was a government employee at the FRI, Dehradun. He joined the service on 7 September 1906. Before that he worked for a brief period in Foreign Department Press, Shimla. He was interested in revolutionary ideas since his early childhood. While working at Dehradun, he got secretly involved with the revolutionaries of Bengal and Arya Samaj. A procession was arranged to mark the arrival of Lord Hardinge in the new capital, New Delhi. In the 1912 bomb attack, the attempt to kill viceroy failed though his mahout got killed in the bombing. But he was injured.

To avoid suspect, Behari returned to Dehradun the same day and also condemned the attack at a meeting held one day later. He got terminated from his job when he took a long leave from service. By the time the British realised the role of Bose in the attack, Behari had fled to Japan where he spent his rest days. He continued his fight against British from Japan and was one of the key founders of Indian National Army in Japan.
