Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary Biography

Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary is an Indian politician who served as the Governor of Meghalaya in office during July 1, 2008 – July 6, 2013. A retired IPS officer, he has earlier served as the director-general of National Security Guards (NSG) and the Border Security Force (BSF). He also served as the first Chief Information Commissioner of the State for a term of 5 years since 2006. He has also served in the CRPF. As an IAS officer, he worked in Kerala for many years and remained as Commissioner of police of Kochi in the early 1980s. He is a recipient of Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

 

Mooshahary was born in the village Odlaguri in Kokrajhar district, Assam in 1946. He studied from Union Christian College, Umiam and St Anthonys College, Shillong. He joined IAS in the year 1967, and was allotted the Kerala cadre. He worked in Kerala throughout 1970s and in the early 1980s. He served as commissioner of police of the city of Kochi in 1981-1982. Inspector General of Police, chief of Crime Branch CID and Director general of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau are the other major administrative posts held by him in Kerala.

 

Later he moved to Assam, and served in Cabinet Secretariat. In the late 1980s, he was appointed in Tamil Nadu, where he served as Deputy Inspector general and Inspector General with federal Central Reserve Police Force. He became Director General of National Security Guards in February 2002 and Director General of the BSF in 2005. He retired from active service in February 2006. In 2008 he was appointed as Governor of Meghalaya.
