Ranjit Bhargava Biography 
Ranjit Bhargava is an Indian environmentalist from Lucknow, UP. He is best known for his efforts for obtaining UNESCO World Heritage site status for the upper Ganga region. He is the son of freedom fighter and social activist, Lila Ramkumar Bhargava. He works towards environmental conservation, and is a recipient of numerous national and international honours. He has been honoured by Netherlands and Germany with Order of the Golden Ark and Order of Merit. For his efforts towards the conservation of environment, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010.
Dr. Ranjit Bhargava was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh into a family known for its services towards society. Bhargava was born the family of Munshi Nawal Kishore, a well-known publisher. His mother Lila Ramkumar Bhargava was a freedom fighter and social activist and a Padma Shri recipient too. his father’s name is Munshi Ram Kumar Bhargava. Later Ranjit worked towards the conservation of environment and closely worked with many organizations and persons related to this object. He also actively participated in many campaigns related to environment. He taught Foreign Affairs at Lucknow University.
He authored a book on environment by title, Environment: A Will To Fail. He headed the Uttar Pradesh chapter of the World Wide Fund for Nature. He is a life member of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. After the death of his son Anirudh Bhargava, he instituted the INTACH Environmental Award in his memory. The renowned environmentalist highlighted the need for including Rishikesh and Haridwar in the Upper Ganga Region, and also tirelessly worked for getting it declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
