Ranjana Kumar Biography

Ranjana Kumar is the first woman to become head of a public sector bank in India. She received this honour when she was appointed as the Chairperson and managing Director of the Indian Bank. She is also the former Vigilance Commissioner in Central Vigilance Commission and has also served as the Chairperson of NABARD. When she was appointed as the head of Indian Bank, the organization was going through its bad times of heavy losses and during her tenure she was able to ensure the turnaround of the bank. She was one among those behind the signature campaigns for clearing Women’s Reservation Bill in 2011.

 

She was born in the family of freedom fighters. She was first schooled at her home at Varanasi. Ranjana’s father was an air force officer and due to her father’s transferable job, her schooling was carried through schools belonging to different cities. She graduated from Women’s college, Hyderabad. Her dream was to become a doctor. But she was not able to secure a professional seat at Medical College. She also studied music, Bharat Natyam and Kathak and was a good orator during her college days and used to represent her college in several inter-college competitions.

 

She was to pursue her PG course in Public administration, when she got through a bank test and got appointed as a probationary officer. It began her banking career in her early 20’s. She joined a commercial bank as a probationary officer in February 1966. After that she has served several high profile positions till now. She has served as the advisor to the Labour ministry working with US.
