Rani Mukerji Biography

Rani Mukerji is a famous Indian actress who concentrates on Hindi films. She was born on 21st March 1978. Her debut film as an actress is Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in the year 1997 and her first successful film was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in the year 1998. This film won her Filmfare award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2004, her film Hum Tum was a great hit. Hum Tum and Yuva won her two major awards, Best Actress award and Best Supporting Actress award of the year.

 

She belongs to a family of Bengali origin and her father is Ram Mukherjee, retired director and her mother is Krishna, playback singer. Her brother Raja Mukerjee is a film producer and director. Debashree Roy, Bengali actress is her uncle and Kajol, Bollywood actress and Ayan Mukerji, writer and director are her cousins. Rani Mukerji studied at Maneckji Cooper High School in Juhu and later joined Mithibai College in Mumbai. She is a trained Odissi dancer.

 

Her film debut started with cameo appearance in Bengali film Biyer Phool in 1992 and after five years she acted in the film, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. As this film was a failure, she went back to her college to continue her education. In 1998, she did Gulam with Aamir Khan. The song Aati Kya Khandala made her popular and gave her the nickname of Khandala Girl. Some other films that she acted are Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Badal, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Saathiya, Chalte Chalte, Black, Bunty Aur Babli, Paheli, The Rising, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Ta Ra Rum, Pim, Dil Bole Hadippa, etc. Dil Bole Hadippa was selected for screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.

 

In November 2006, when she was participating in the shooting of the film Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, at Varanasi, her security beat the crowd back and this went into a controversy in media. She was criticized for not stopping her security and later she had to issue an apology. She helped a lot to raise funds for Tsunami victims and for the National Centre for Promotional of Employment for Disabled People. She donated her share of revenue from Kaun Banega Crorepati to Holy Family Hospital.
