Randhir Singh Biography

Randhir Singh is an Indian shooter who took part in Olympic Games. He is the only Indian representative in the International Olympic Committee. He received Arjuna Award in the year 1979.

 

He was born on 18th October 1946 in Patiala in Punjab in India. His father is Raja Bhalindra Singh the son of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. He finished his schooling at Yadavindra Public School in Patiala and got his bachelors’ degree in history from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. He married Rani Uma Kumari of Sirmur and has three children. He also enjoys playing cricket, golf, squash and swimming.

 

He belonged to a family of sports administrators. His uncle Maharaja Yadavindra Singh was a test cricketer and his father was the member of IOC from 1947 to 1992. He made his shooting debut when he was 18 and took part in the winning trap shooting team at the Indian National Championships in 1964. In the year 1967 in skeet he won the first national individual title. He had won many titles in both skeet and trap shooting.

 

He won his gold medal in 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok. He won team silver in 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi. He took part in five Olympic Games from 1968 to 1984 in Mixed Trap. His best performance in Olympics was getting 17th place in 1968 Olympics with four points away from bronze medal. He also took part in four Asian Games.

 

He served as the Founder Secretary General of Afro Asian Games Council from 1998 to 2007. Being the Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee, he has a great part in bringing 2010 Commonwealth Games to India.

 

He served as the Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association since 1987 and Secretary General of Olympic Council of Asia from 1991. He also is serving as the member of the Association of National Olympic Committees Executive Board since 2002 and member of the International Olympic Committee since 2001. He has received honorary doctorate degrees for his contributions.
