Ranbir Singh Hooda Biography

Ranbir Singh Hooda was a freedom fighter and Congress politician from Haryana. He was a minister in the undivided Punjab and then Haryana government. His son Bhupinder Singh Hooda is a member of Indian National Congress politician and served as the Chief Minister of Haryana from 2004 to 2014. His grandson Deepender Singh Hooda is a two-time parliamentarian representing Indian National Congress. As of now, his third generation has successfully entered politics. Ranbir was a part of Gandhian army in the 1930s. He has been imprisoned several times for freedom struggle movement, and he also remained closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi during the latter's visits to Rohtak and nearby districts of Punjab. He served as the president of the All-India Freedom Fighters Organisation till his demise in 2009 aged 94.

 

Ranbir Singh Hooda, also known as Chaudhary Ranbir Singh Hooda was born on 26 November 1914 in Sanghi, Rohtak, Punjab. Sanghi was a small village in Rohtak district of undivided Punjab when he was born. His early education was done at his village, and later Hooda joined Vaish High School, Rohtak. He completed matriculation in 1933 and passed his FA examination in 1935 from Government college. He graduated from Ramjas College, Delhi in 1937.

 

He joined freedom struggle movement in the 1930s. He got arrested for the first time in 1941, and was jailed for 3.5 years. He was also put under home arrest for next two years. He was sent him to the Constituent Assembly in July 1947, and he played an important role in the framing of the Indian Constitution. He successfully contested the first general election in 1952 from the Rohtak, and he retained the seat in 1957 general elections too. When Haryana state was formed in 1966, he served as a minister. Ranbir Singh Hooda was the founder general secretary of Bharat Krishak Samaj and the All-India Backward Classes Federation.
