Rana Ayyub Biography

Rana Ayyub is an Indian journalist and writer, best known for the book, Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover Up. She is mostly associated with non-fiction, and currently one of the leading young writers & journalists of the country. Her sting operations of Gujarat riots of 2002 for Tehelka magazine, and her disputes with Tarun Tejpal and Shoma Chaudhury were well-covered by media. When the magazine refused to publish it citing incomplete, Rana published it by her own right. Though the book remained controversial, giving many debates, it was a bestseller too. Rana Ayyub received the Sanskriti award for excellence in journalism in 2011, and many other honours.

 

Rana Ayyub was born in Mumbai on 1 May 1984 into a Muslim family. Her father was a journalist with Blitz. When Mumbai city witnessed riots in 1992-93, her family shifted to Muslim-dominant suburb of Deonar. Rana spent much of her time in Deonar in her childhood and later. As a journalist, she worked with Tehelka, a Delhi-based magazine known for many sting operations and investigation thrillers. Rana worked as an investigative journalist, and the biggest assignment given was to do a sting operation on Gujarat riots of 2002 and record the opinions of big officials, regarding this matter.

 

She spent around ten months in disguise, and got paid a regular monthly salary from Tehelka during this period. She also made an identity card of a Hindu girl for her operations. She was fully engaged in this operation, and put full dedication. At the end of the sting operation, the management of Tehelka refused to publish it. Yet she continued with her operation, and finally published it as ‘Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover Up’.

 

The book received positive responses from critics. However many shopkeepers refused to keep it in the stores, and purchases were mostly done on Amazon. The book sold over 32,000 copies. She resigned from Tehelka as a senior editor in protest over how the organisation handled the sexual assault charge against its founder and editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal.
