Ramnath Biswas Biography

Ramnath Biswas was an Indian revolutionary and soldier, but best known as a writer of travelogues. He is also known for circumnavigating the globe by bicycle, and he prepared notes and published them as travelogues. He lived during the period, 13 January 1894 – 1 November 1955 in the Assam Provinces of British India. After partition, his birthplace became a part of East Pakistan. However he migrated to Kolkata only a few years later he published his books from the newly formed nation. He published more than 30 books, mostly belonging to travelogues. Bhabaghurer Bishwabhraman, Bhietnamer Bidrohi Bir, Maranbijayi Chin, Mao Maoer Deshe, Andhakarer Afrika, Ajker Amerika, Jujitsu Japan etc are the books authored by him.

Ramnath Biswas was born on 13 January 1894 in Baniachong, Assam Province, British India. Birajanath Biswas and Gunamayee Devi were his parents. Now his birth place is a part of Bangladesh.  He did his schooling from Harischandra High School till the eighth grade, and was forced to quit studies following the death of his father. His professional career began in Sylhet, where he joined as a manager at the Jatiya Bhandar Samiti, a Swadeshi enterprise. It owned a repairing shop and he started learning driving after that. He learnt to ride bicycle while he was associated with the enterprise.

When he took his second job, he secretly joined the revolutionary group Anushilan Samiti. When the organization came to know about it, he was expelled from his job. When First World War broke out Ramnath joined the Bengali Paltan (military) and went to Mesopotamia. In 1924 he joined British Indian army. He conducted a total of three world tours between 1931 and 1940, and he took almost three years to complete each. In fact he was fully busy with world tours throughout 1930s, riding on his bicycle.
