Ramnarayan V. Pathak Biography

Ramnarayan V. Pathak was an Indian writer belonging to Gujarati literature. Pathak wrote criticism, poetry, drama, metrics and short stories. He also edited and translated several works. His wife Heera Pathak was also a well-known writer of Gujarati language. He was a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award (1956) for his work Bruhat Pingal, and also Narmad Suvarna Chandrak (1949) for Prachin Gujarati Chhando. He served as the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 1946. He lived during the period, 1887 – 1955.

Ramnarayan V. Pathak was born on 8 April 1887 in the remote village of Ganol. His birth place now belongs to Dholka Taluka, Ahmedabad district, Gujarat. His early education was completed at various places such as Jetpur, Rajkot, Jamkhambhaliya and Bhavnagar and completed his matriculation with first rank. He pursued graduation from Wilson College, Mumbai, and later completed L.L.B from Bombay University. Initially he worked as a Sanskrit teacher for a brief period. After completing his law studies, he worked as Pleader at Ahmedabad and Sadra for seven years, after which he was dialogized of tuberculosis, and he had to leave law practice. He then continued with his teaching career.

In 1920, he got involved with non-cooperation movement, influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and joined Gujarat Vidyapith along with Rasiklal Parikh as a professor in 1921. He taught there till 1928, and was quite active in writing career. He married twice during his lifetime. Noted writer Heera Pathak was his second wife, and the couple had no children. Pathak wrote criticism, poetry, drama, metrics and short stories. He published three volume of short stories entitled Dwirefni Vato, in three different decades since 1920s.He passed away in the year 1955.
