Rammanohar Lohia Biography

Rammanohar Lohia was an Indian freedom fighter and a political leader. He was born on 23rd March 1910 in Akbarpur in Uttar Pradesh in British India. His parents are Hira Lal and Chanda. He was born in a Marwari Maheswari family. His mother died at his young age and he took part in the Indian Independence Movement at his early age.

 

He started his struggle for freedom by organizing a small hartal on the death of Bala Ganghadhara Tilak. His father was an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and he took his son to the meeting with Mahatma. Rammanohar Lohia was influenced by his meetings and he developed his love for swaraj. He was very impressed by the spiritual power of Gandhi and wanted to follow him. He took part in the Satyagraha when he was only ten years old.

 

He studied at Banaras Hindu University and completed his intermediate course. He got his Bachelor of Arts degree from Calcutta University and attended Berlin University at Germany. He learned German and got scholarship for his intelligence.

 

He attended League of Nations in Geneva and Maharaja of Bikaner represented India. He protested the moves of Maharaja of Bikaner from the visitors’ gallery as he supported British Government. He formed the Association of European Indians and became the secretary of this club. He wanted to expand Indian nationalism to the other parts of the world.

 

He joined Indian National Congress and was attracted to socialistic culture. He played an important role in founding the Congress Socialist Party in 1934. He became a member of All India Congress Committee in 1936 and he became the first secretary of the committee. He defined the foreign policy of India.

 

When the Second World War started, he preached all the Indians to boycott the government institutions. He was arrested and released on 24th May 1939. He wrote the article, Satyagraha Now in the newspaper of Gandhiji, Harijan and this was published on 1st June 1940. He wrote many articles to spread his message. He took part in the Quit India Movement in 1942.

 

After the independence of India, he advocated the strategy of non-congressism in 1963. He could get huge success in 1967 and Congress was defeated in nine states by Samyuktha Vidhayak Dal governments. He remained unmarried throughout his life. He died on 12th October 1967 in New Delhi.
