Ramesh Parekh Biography

Ramesh Parekh was an Indian writer belonging to Gujarati literature, who authored several children’s books. He also authored lyrics for Gujarati movies, and wrote several poems. Kumar Suvarna Chandrak (1970), Uma-Snehrashmi Prize (1978-79), Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak (1986) and    Sahitya Akademi Award (1994) are the major honours received by him. Parekh is widely regarded as one of the greatest among modern Gujarati poets, who contributed to geet, ghazal and non-lyrical forms of Gujarati poetry. He had deep interest in literature and music. Vitan Sud Beej (1989) is his celebrated work.

Ramesh Parekh was born on 27 November 1940 in Amreli, Gujarat. Mohanlal and Narmadaben were his parents. He had deep interest towards writing since his childhood, and his first story Pretni Duniya was published in a school magazine, while he was studying at school. He was brilliant in academics as well and completed his 10^th grade studies with a first class. Initially he was interested in arts and paintings. But due to the bad financial situation of his family, he couldn’t fulfil his dream. In 1960 he joined government service at Amreli district office and worked as a government servant till his retirement.

Though he couldn’t pursue his dreams to become a painter, he didn’t give up his passion towards art, painting, music and writings. He was quite active in writing field, while he was fully busy with his government job. It was Gujarati poet Anil Joshi who recommended him to concentrate on to writing poetry, and Ramesh succeeded as a lyricist and poet. In 2006 Gujarati literature lost a series of literary giants like Ajit Seth, Shantilal Shah, Chandrakanth Bakshi, Ramesh parekh, Bakul Tripathi, Maniraj Barot, Keka Shastri, Ramanlal Joshi, Ramanlal Soni, Gulabdas Broker etc.
