Ramesh Deo Biography

Ramesh Deo is a well known character artist of Indian cinema, concentrated most on Hindi cinema. He is a well known theatre artist and television actor also. He has worked in more than 285 Hindi Films, 190 Marathi Films and 30 Marathi Dramas since the golden era of Indian cinema. He is also a producer and director who made movies, television serials, documentaries and commercials also. Throughout his life, his work has been appreciated and honoured state and national level several times. He is married to noted actor Seema Deo. Veteran actors have recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends from the film industry on July, 2013. His sons too, are established names of Indian cinema. His son Ajinkya Deo is a noted Marathi director while his second son, Abhinay Deo is now a popular face of Bollywood with his directorial debut for Aamir Khan’s production, Delhi Belly in 2011.

Ramesh Deo was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1929. His ancestors were from Rajasthan, a family of engineers who built Jodhpur palace. His father was a judge of Kolhapur. His debut came in the form of a cameo in the 1951 Marathi film Paatlaachi Por. He first appeared on screen as a group of college students, while he along with his friends went to watch a film shooting. When film director gave them a bit role as college students, they accepted it for which girls got 10 rupees and boys got 8 rupees each. Later he became a junior artist paid with 25 rupees a day. His first noted work was Marathi movie Andhala Magto Ek Dola (1956) directed by Raja Paranjape, where he played villain’s role. His first Hindi film was Rajshree Production's successful film, Aarti (1962). Later he became a part of Hindi film industry and has worked with actors belonging to different decades. Ramesh was mostly seen in supporting and character roles in most of these movies. Ramesh has also worked in 30 stage plays staged for more than 200 shows.

He was honoured with Life time achievement award at Pune International Film festival in 2013. Throughout his career, Ramesh has played numerous memorable character roles and three movies in lead role, though flopped. Rajesh Khanna’s Anand needs special mention, where he worked aside his real life wife - Seema. Together, they have worked in more than 75 movies and gradually love developed between them that resulted in marriage. Aap ki kasam and Mere Apne are other noted character roles. He has appeared in numerous Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna movies. As a film director, his Marathi movie, Sarja was a blockbuster.
