Ramakanta Panda Biography 
Ramakanta Panda is a doctor and Cardiovascular surgeon by profession. He is the most prolific heart surgeon of the country. He currently serves as Managing Director of the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai and also the Chief Consultant for Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery and the Vice Chairman of the institute. The institute was set up by Panda in 2002. One of the most eligible Cardiovascular surgeons of the country, he has performed over 20,000 cardiac surgeries. It includes over 3000 high risk cases. In bypass surgery he has a success rate of 99.6%, and hence also called 'one of the safest heart surgeons in the world'. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2010, for his contributions towards medical field.
His full name is Ramakanta Madanmohan Panda. He belongs to Damadorpur of Jajpur district, Odisha. He studied Medicine at BJB College and SCB Medical College, Cuttack, and was the university topper in both. He did his PG in surgery and heart surgery at AIIMS during 1980-1985, and became the topper too. Later he completed his fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic, USA, and worked for one year at Harefield Hospital, UK before he returned to his mother country.
He was one among the first Indian doctors to introduce "total arterial revascularization". Panda is also a pioneer of "off-pump" bypass surgery, redo bypass surgery and high-risk surgeries. He brought many latest medical advances to India, and tried successful too. In January 2010, Ramakanta Panda was awarded the Padma Bhushan. One year prior to it, he has operated then Prime minister Manmohan Singh, 'redo bypass’ which earned him a lot of publicity. He has also successfully treated politicians like Rajiv Shukla, Tarun Gogoi, Lalu Prasad Yadav etc.
