Ramakant Gundecha Biography

Ramakant Gundecha was an Indian classical singer of the dhrupad genre of the Dagar vani. He along with his elder brother Umakant Gundecha forms the singing duo, Gundecha Brothers. The duo has one more brother, Akhilesh Gundecha, a musician and tabla artist, who accompany Gundecha Brothers for their live music concerts. Gundecha Brothers have been honoured with fourth civilian honour Padma Shri by government of India in 2012 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2017. Ramakant Gundecha passed away most recently in 2019, after performing with his elder brother for nearly 35 years. He suffered a heart attack in his late 50s. Now Ramakant Gundecha’s son Anant Gundecha is performing with his paternal uncle for live concerts.

 

Ramakant Gundecha hailed from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. He studied music and commerce. After academic studies the brothers moved to Bhopal in 1981 for training in Dhrupad music under Zia Fariduddin Dagar and his brother Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. They did rigorous training under gurus for 4 years and gave their first public performance together in in May 1985, at the Uttaradhikar dance and music festival in Bhopal. Since then the siblings performed only together for many decades till death separated them in 2019. The younger brother Ramakant Gundecha was only 57 when he passed away following heart attack.

 

Gundecha Brothers – one of the leading vocalists of dhrupad sangeet of present day generation owns a huge fan following crowd. They also frequently sing compositions of their contemporary artist, Puru Dadheech, Kathak dancer. The brothers have opened a music school in Dhrupad and follow gurukula tradition in teaching students. Apart from live performances, the brothers have also released numerous musical albums. Swati Tirunal Samman in 2018, Kumar Gandharva Award by Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1998, Ustad Allauddin Khan Fellowship in 1993 are other major honours received by them,
