Ramachandra Babu Biography

Ramachandra Babu is a well-established cinematographer of Malayalam cinema. He has also worked in Tamil, Telugu, English and Hindi language films and has won many accolades. Apart from movies, he has also been associated with ad films and documentaries. He belongs to Maduranthakam, Tamil Nadu, born in the year 1947. He is a graduate of FTII Pune. He bagged Kerala State Film Award for Best Cinematography four times. He won it for the first time when this section was freshly announced in Kerala state awards. The movie was Dweep in 1976, his first colour film shot in Eastman Color. Rathinirvedam (1978) and Chamaram (1980) and Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha (1989) are the rest three movies. He has worked in more than 125 films till now.

 

Born in Tamil Nadu, he completed his graduation from Loyola College Chennai in 1966 and then studied cinematography from prestigious FTII, Pune. Balu Mahendra, John Abraham and K. G. George were his friends at FTII who later became great directors of south Indian cinema. Later he associated with John Abraham and K. G. George for many noted projects. He completed diploma from FTII in 1971 and soon joined film industry. His debut film, Vidyarthikale Ithile Ithile was released before his completion of the course and the movie was directed by his friend at FTII, John Abraham. He has been associated with the directorial debuts of two popular film directors of Malayalam cinema - M.T. Vasudevan Nair and K. G. George, the movies being Nirmalyam (1973) and Swapnadanam (1976) respectively. Nirmalyam received National Award For Best Feature Film in 1973.

 

His contribution to Malayalam film industry is indeed significant. He introduced many new experimental ideas of colours and colour mixing to Malayalam cinema. Marmaram, Pagal Nilavu, Aadharam, Ghazal, Agraharathil Kazhuthai, Kanmadham and Yavanika are other noted works. In 2009, he received Kerala Film Critics Award for Kadaksham.
