Ram Rahman Biography

Ram Rahman is a photographer, artist, curator, designer and activist based in Delhi. He is one of the founding members of the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust. He is the son of Indrani Rahman, a classical Indian dancer, and Habib Rahman, a noted Indian architect. His elder sister Sukanya Rahman is a classical dancer who practises Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. She is also a writer, painter and visual artist who has exhibited her works in many galleries and Museums in India and abroad. His maternal grandmother Ragini Devi was also a renowned dancer of 20th century.

 

Ram Rahman was born in 1955 into a family of artists. Born as the son of Indian architect Habib Rahman and classical Indian dancer Indrani Rahman, he chose art as his field. He studied physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by Graphic Design from the Yale University School of Art. Later he established himself as a leading photographer and curator, who has exhibited his art pieces across the world. He curated "The Sahmat Collective: Art and Activism in India” since 1989. He has also exhibited his photography works.

 

Sunil Janah: Photographs 1940-1960, Defending Husain in the Public Sphere: The SAHMAT Experience and The Sahmat Collective: Art and Activism in India since 1989 are among his published books. Some of his exhibitions after 2000 include - Bioscope: Scenes from an Eventful Lifepresented by Bodhi Art at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi (2008), Apparao Infinity, Chennai (2007), Photo Studio at India International Center, New Delhi (2003), Visions of India: Photographs by Ram Rahman at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio (2002.), Still Moving Images at the Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon (2008).
