Ram Kumar (basketball) Biography

Ram Kumar is a retired Basketball player of India, who is regarded as the best shooter from India. He is the son of legendary basketball player and Arjuna Awardee Khushi Ram, regarded as the best Asian player in this game. A coach of the junior Indian team, Ram Kumar he also coaches Rail Coach Factory’s Kapurthala team. A leading player for India, who represented India at many international events during the period, 1985 to 1996, he also served as the captain of Indian national basketball team from 1991 to 1995 and played the position of shooting guard. Ram Kumar is a recipient of Dhyan Chand Award in 2003 for his overall contributions to the field of Indian basketball. He is nicknamed - Old war horse of railway.

 

He was born in 1964 in Dwaraka Delhi. Since his teens he started playing and received training from his father, the legendary Khushi Ram. His younger brother Ashok Kumar has also served Indian basketball team and has served as captain. He started his professional career in 1983; the same year Indian cricket team won its maiden world cup. He played his first National Championship at Kozhikode, Kerala. He joined government service department of income tax and continued with his sports journey as well. Since 1983 he was associated with the sports till 1996. In between he won Dhyan Chand Award in 2003, Rail Minister Award (1994) and Maharana Pratap Award in 1989.

 

He became the top scorer of many games in India and abroad, and was a top class shooter. Some of his outstanding achievements during his career include - Top scorer of tournament at world railway games in New Delhi in 1987, Best player in S.A.F Games in Colombo in 1991, Top scorer in world railway games at Romania in 1991 and many more. Now age 50+, he is busy in the field as one of the leading coaches of the country.
