Ram Karan Sharma Biography

Dr. Ram Karan Sharma is a Sanskrit poet, writer and scholar from the state of Bihar. He hails from Shivapur in the Saran district. He has published many works in Sanskrit and English. Elements of poetry in the Mahabharata is his critic work in Sanskrit language. Sandhya, Patheyasatakam and Vina are his poetry collections. Rayisah and Sima are his published novels. He received Sahitya Akademi Award for Sanskrit in 1989, and many other honours such as Krishna Kanta Handique Memorial Award 2005, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award 1989, Delhi Sanskrit Academy Award, and the Presidential Award.

 

He also contributed research papers in various seminars, journals and books on south Asian studies. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and Member of the American Oriental Society. He has been an educator and administrator who formally served as the vice chancellor of Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, Darbhanga. He has also served as a visiting professor to many educational institutions and universities across the world, teaching Sanskrit.

 

Well-known Sanskrit scholar Ram Karan Sharma was born in Shivapur in the Saran district, Bihar in the year 1927 in British India. He completed his MA in Sanskrit and Hindi from Patna University. Along with this, he continued with his Sanskrit studies and earned Sahityacharya, Vyakarana Shastri and Vedanta Shastri degrees. Over the years, he has held many prestigious positions in government and academic institutions, and still now continuing with his same efforts even after retirement.

 

He served as Special Officer (Sanskrit), Govt. of India for one decade since 1961. He was posted as Director of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan from 1970-1974 and 1980-1983. After that he served as he was Joint Educational Advisor, Govt. of India for one year before he was appointed as Vice Chancellor of Sampurnananda Sanskrit University, Varanasi in 1985.
