Ram Dayal Munda Biography

Ram Dayal Munda, also known as R. D. Munda was an artist, scholar and regional music exponent. He was a member of Rajya Sabha as well as National Advisory Council. For his overall contributions to Indian art, he was honoured with Padma Shri in 2010. He died the following year. He is a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and he has also served as a vice-chancellor of Ranchi University. In his honour, Rajkiya Kala Kendra situated in Khelgaon is now known as Dr. Ramdayal Munda Rajkiya Kala Bhavan.


Munda was born in the tribal village Diuri in the Ranchi district in 1939. He completed his secondary education in Khunti. As Khunti attracted scholars across the world, ram along with his friends served as guide for the new visitors to the place. He opted anthropology as his subject for higher education. He got higher education in linguistics in University of Chicago, where he completed his research work and earned a PhD. He joined Department of South Asian Studies soon after his research work and pioneered the teaching of tribal and regional Languages. He also taught South-East Asian languages at Minnesota University.


During his stay in Chicago, he came into contact with the native-American activists and committed to the political emancipation of highly populated India. After his return to India he became the Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University in 1985. He got retired from his service in 1999. After that he dedicted his full time for the improvement of tribal people and his works were done globally which gained attention. He also took part in the UN Working Group on Indigenous Peoples in Geneva and other forums, with regard to this subject.
