Rakhi Birla Biography

Rakhi Birla is a young politician from Aam Aadmi Party. Now she is the cabinet minister of Women & Child, Social Welfare and Languages in Delhi Government. In the Delhi Assembly elections 2012, she won from Mongolpuri constituency defeating PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan of the Sheila Dikshit cabinet. She won by more than 10,500 vote’s majority. Born in the year 1987, Birla is not only the youngest but also the only woman face in AAP’s cabinet. She is the youngest ever Cabinet Minister of Delhi till now.

She was born in Delhi to Sheila and Bhupendra Singh Bidhlan, and is the youngest of their four daughters. Her family has been associated with social work or freedom struggle movement for the past 4 generations or so. Her real surname is Bidhlan. It was changed to Birla by mistake when her school teacher made a mistake while preparing her Class X certificate. She graduated from Shivaji College of Delhi University and completed Masters in Mass Communication from NBA School Of Mass Communication, Delhi. After graduation she joined a local television channel as a reporter. She worked with social organisations for the cause of the Valmiki community. Her father broke his long term association with Indian National Congress in 2011 during the Janlokpal movement.   

During her stint as journalist, she covered the Janlokpal movement and came in contact with India against Corruption and Arvind Kejriwal. Thus, when AAP was formed, she joined the party and stood as candidate against cabinet minister Raj Kumar Chauhan in Mongolpuri constituency. Chauhan was four times MLA Raj Kumar Chauhan of Indian National Congress. She had declared assets worth Rupees 51,150 in her election affidavit.
