Rakesh Chaurasia Biography

Rakesh Chaurasia is an Indian flautist from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He is the nephew of celebrated flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia. One of the top flautists of present-day generation, he was awarded 'Indian of the Year 2017. Since 2001 he has released several musical albums, and also collaborated with many well-known artists. Abhijit Pohankar and Rakesh Chaurasia – Tranquility (2001), Talvin Singh and Rakesh Chaurasia – Vira (2002), Rupak Kulkarni and Rakesh Chaurasia etc are some of his released albums.

 

Rakesh Chaurasia was born 10 January 1971 in Allahabad into a musical family. He plays bamboo flute in Hindustani music. He is the nephew of flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia. He is making a mark in the music firmament right now. Adept at playing the classical genre, he is equally sucecsfully in fusion ventures too. Listening to his flute play is like listening to his uncle - for such is the similarity in style. Rakesh has inspired a lot from his uncle, carrying forward his legacy as well. He received training from his uncle in traditional Gurukula style of learning. He composes music and plays the flute for some thematic albums too, which include works like Farewell and Brindavan Mukti.

 

He extensively practices, as instructed by his uncle and takes care of breathing - inhaling and exhaling. He also does other exercises like walking and jogging to build up stamina. He proved his mettle as a composer in the album Farewell where the music is sombre. He has also been associated with fusion albums. Rakesh plays for Bollywood films too, yet he is not interested in composing sound tracks for movies. He loves to listen to western and Indian classical music. Jazz, ghazals, classical – he loves them all.
