Rajkumar Bharathi Biography

Rajkumar Bharathi is a Carnatic singer and vocalist from Tamil Nadu. He is one of the most popular artists of present day generation, and has equal number of fans from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. He is the great grandson of the very influential poet Subramanya Bharathi. Rajkumar Bharathi has been honored by several Awards. A few of them include - Gana Kala Bharathi by Hindu American Temple and Cultural Centre, USA; Sahitya Priya Award by Jankalyan Trust, Chennai; Sangeetha Sudhakara by Sringeri Sankaracharya, Sringeri Math; Kalki Award for Young Musician by the Kalki Magazine, and a few more. He has also done playback singing in south Indian films, though he didn’t take it as his profession.

 

Rajkumar Bharathi was born into a family of musicians and literals, and a patron of arts. He was born in 1958 to Venkatasubramanian and Lalita Bharathi, the younger daughter of Thangammal Bharathi, the second of Bharathiyar’s daughters. He started learning music from his mother at the age of 5. Later he received training from Valliyur Gurumurthi, M. Balamuralikrishna and T. V. Gopalakrishnan. He completed engineering from College of Engineering, Guindy and worked in an R&D division with government sector. He quit his professional job to give full time to music. A life exclusively dedicated for music, he has performed in music concerts, in India and abroad. He has also released many albums to his credit. He also conducts music workshops in India and several parts of the world.

 

He rendered all the 18 chapters of Bhagavd Gita, in 4 volumes produced by Ramakrishna Math. He was also a member of the Madras Youth Choir, and sung over 150 songs for all south Indian language films. Great composer M. S. Viswanathan used his voice in Ezhavadu Manidhan which featured a Bharathiyar song. For his clear diction and Sahithya Bhava, he is indeed popular among the masses. He is also a music composer in his own right. A child prodigy, he tragically lost his voice at the peak of his career. But he pursued a career as a music composer, and also won Sangeet Natak Akademi Music for Dance Award for the year 2015.
