Rajiv Rai Biography

Rajiv Rai is a popular Bollywood director during late 80’s and 90’s. He is most famous for action movies and suspense thrillers. Though he has given some blockbuster movies to Hindi, he has done only finger countable movies till now. His movies like Gupt-The Hidden truth, Mohra, Tridev and Vishwatma are all time blockbusters and have helped in grooming the career of many leading actors of Bollywood at present including Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, Kajol, Bobby Deol, Sangeeta Bijlani, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty and everyone’s favourite Divya Bharathi. Rajiv Rai has given her one among the best movies of her career Viswatma and was also given the movie Mohra, before death took her away. Viju Shah is the popular composer of Rajiv Rai. All the major hits of Viju Shah’s career belong to Rajiv Rai.  

Rajiv Rai is the son of late producer, Gulshan Rai who is the director of the film production company, Trimurthi films. Under the banner of his father’s home production, he has directed all his movies from Tridev to the latest Asambhav. Yudh was his movie as debutant director. Through the movies Pyar Ishq aur Mohabbat and Assambhav, he tried to launch Arjun Rampal as a promising hero of Bollywood. Yet he failed in both these attempts. Pyar ishq aur Mohabbat starred Kannada top actress Keerthi Reddy in the leading role while Priyanka Chopra was casted opposite Arjun Rampal in Assambhav.

Except Kalyaniji Anandji’s compositions in Tridev and Yudd during 80’s, music of all Rajiv Rai movies from Vishwatma to Assambav (movies of 90’s and 2000’s) were given by one and only Viju Shah. It helped grooming Viju Shah’s career a lot. All his movies have chartbuster songs and have helped a lot in the success of movies, particularly the finely choreographed dance numbers. Tirchi topi wale of Tridev, Duniya hasseeno ka mela and Title track of Gupt and Tip tip barsa pani and Tu cheez badi hai of Mohra were big hits.

His movies always contain a huge star cast of 6 or 8 leading actors. His mega blockbuster movie – Gupt is one among the biggest suspense thrillers ever made on Bollywood and its truth unfolded in the climax makes it a remarkable movie. Same is the case of sudden twist of Mohra’s climax. He might not have made so many movies in Hindi, because he believed in quality than quantity. Rajiv rai is married to Sonam, the heroine of his movies Tridev and Viswatma.
