Rajeshwar Dayal Biography

Rajeshwar Dayal was an Indian diplomat and writer, who served as Ambassador of India to the former state of Yugoslavia, and also Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations. He also served as Head of the United Nations Operation in the Congo. As a diplomat he is best known for serving this elite post during 1960-1961 for a brief period. Prior to appointing in this post, he served as the Indian Ambassador to France. Government of India honoured him with Padma Vibhushan in 1969. It was the highest civilian award when it was given. He published several non-fictional books on socio-political themes, among which Panchayati Raj in India was most popular.

 

The man known for supreme patience, Rajeshwar Dayal was born on 12 August 1909. Dayal was one of the earlier officers of the Indian Foreign Service. He served as Indian ambassador to two different countries in the 1950s, soon after independence, before being appointed as Head of the United Nations Operation in the Congo for a brief period in the early 1960s. As Indian Foreign Secretary, he played an important role in two UN missions, one in Lebanon in 1958 and the other in the Congo in the early 1960s.

 

Dayal also wrote two books about his assignments with the United Nations. Mission for Hammarskjöld dealt solely with his role in the peacekeeping mission in the Congo in the 1960s, while his second book was a comprehensive autobiography called A Life of Our Times. For his excellenet role as a diplomat, he was honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 1969. He died on 17 September 1999 following a stroke. He was survived by his wife.
