Rajendra Yadav Biography

Rajendra Yadav was a prominent fiction writer of Hindi language. He was a pioneer of the Hindi literary movement known as Nayi Kahani, better known for his association with literary magazine HANS, founded by Munshi Premchand in 1930. The publication closed in 1953 was re-launched by Yadav on 31 July 1986, Premchand’s birthday. His wife Mannu Bhandari is also a famous Hindi fiction writer. Rajendra Yadav was born in Agra on 28 August 1929 and died in New Delhi on 28 October 2013. He was 84 and was fighting with bad health for a short period.

 

Born in Agra, Yadav received early education from his hometown. Later he studied from Meerut. He graduated in 1949, and later completed his MA in Hindi at Agra University in 1951. Same year he published his first novel, Pret Bolte Hain which was later re-titled as Sara Akash. This novel was a great move to shock orthodox Indian traditional society post Indian independence. It was made to a Bollywood movie by Basu Chatterjee in 1969 with the same title. Same year National award winning Bengali movie, Bhuvam Shome directed by Mrinal Sen and Uski Roti directed by Mani Kaul were also released launching Parallel Cinema (New wave) in Indian cinema. The movie was shot at Yadav's ancestral home in Agra.

 

His second published novel was Ukhre Huey Log telling the trauma of a couple due to socio-economic condition which forced them to desert the conventional path. He has also published two more novels – Kulta and Shaah aur Maat.  He has also written numerous short stories that have been translated to many Indian and foreign countries. He wrote ‘Ek Inch Muskaan’ along with his wife. Along with Mohan Rakesh and Kamleshwar, he was one of the giant pillars of the Nai Kahani movement which ushered significant change in both the content and style of Hindi short stories.
