Rajashree Warrier Biography

Dr. Rajashree Warrier is a highly acclaimed classical dancer and dance choreographer from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. She is a trained Carnatic singer too who took PG in music, and later completed PhD. She is a former TV host who worked with Doordarshan since 1989. Later she quit her job in Doordarshan to pursue her dreams to become a successful dancer. She is the founder director of 'UTTARIKA, Centre for Performing Arts', which teaches students, apart from doing research works in carnatic music, experimental theater and Bharatnatyam. She has scripted, directed and presented many shows for television in the 1990s.

 

Rajashree Warrier was born and brought up in the capital city of Kerala. She was born in the year 1974 and both her parents are retired central government employees. She is a divorcee, a single mother who looks after her daughter. After completing Master’s in Music, she started her career as a television presenter. Though she was not much interested in the job she continued it as an earning means. But after staying with Doordarshan for a few years, she quit her job and pursued her passion of music and dance. Rajashree remembers it to be the turning point of her career. Though she was associated with Doordarshan as a TV host, she continued with her dance practices in the evenings.

 

Earlier known as a media person, now she is known as a Bharatnatyam exponent, a Carnatic singer, a great teacher and choreographer. She conducts classical dance and vocal concerts across the globe. Took initial training in Carnatic music from Mullamudu Harihara Iyer, she took advanced training from Perumbavoor Raveendranatha Menon, Parassala B. Ponnammal and B Sasikumar. A household name among Kerala audience, she hosted the popular show - Suprabhatham on Asianet for four years. She has also been associated with Doordarshan and Amrita TV.

 

She published two books on classical dance – Narthaki and Nruthakala. Devdasi National Award - 2014, Kerala Sangita Nataka Academy award 2013 and Navarasam Sangeeta Sabha Award 2007 are the major honours received by her.
