Raj Rewal Biography

Raj Rewal is a renowned architect of India, whose name is counted among the top 5 architects of the country. He hails from Punjab. A gold medallist from the Indian Institute of Architects, he has also fetched several awards for his outstanding works, including the prestigious Robert Mathew Award. Parliament Library, Hall of Nations, Asian Games Village and STC Building at New Delhi etc are among his major projects. Through creativity and imagination he weaves expressions of heritage and history into a modern vocabulary with traditional concepts and contemporary syntax.

 

The living legend Raj Rewal was born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab in the year 1934. Later he moved to Delhi and then Shimla where he lived till 1951. Then he returned to Delhi to study architecture. He enrolled at Delhi School of Architecture in 1951 and studied for next three years. In 1955 he moved to London where he studied for next 6 years and took advanced learning at Architectural Association School of Architecture followed by Brixton School of Building. In 1960 he moved to Paris and after two years of working experience he moved back to Delhi where he started his professional career.

 

He started his career in India as faculty and taught at the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi between 1963 and 1972. Along with his professional career in Delhi, he opened an office at Tehran in 1974. Most of his works were concentrated in Delhi. Among his works, Hall of Nations (Hall 6) at the Pragati Maidan Exhibition Centre is one of his famous architectural projects, which was demolished in 2017. Gold Medal 1989 by the Indian Institute of Architects, Robert Mathew Award 1989 by the Commonwealth Association of Architects, Chevalier des Arts des Lettres award, 2005 by the French Government, John Michael Kohler Life Time Achievement Award etc are the major honours received by him.
