Raj Mathai Biography

Raj Mathai – USA’s first Indian sportscaster is the weeknight news anchor for NBC Bay Area. He is a four time Emmy winner who has travelled the world for NBC Bay Area. Mathai is an Indian of Kerala origin. The best-selling Indian authors Abraham Verghese and Jeet Thayil are his cousins. Noted professor of Stanford, Thomas Kailath is his uncle. He was a public relations assistant with the San Diego Chargers, before starting his career as an American broadcaster. He is a guest instructor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

 

He was born on March 28, 1971 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Till 7, he spent at Mumbai and later he moved with his family to US. His father T. J. Mathew is a noted journalist and his uncle T. J. S. George too is a senior journalist and columnist. His family got settled at Palo Alto, California. He graduated with a degree in journalism and political science from San Diego State University. He worked for NBC stations in Fresno, San Diego, and Arizona before his association with NBC Bay Area. In 1995, Raj became the first Indian sportscaster for US network affiliate.

 

He is one among those rare personalities of the world who got the privilege to have run the Olympic Torch three times (1996, 2002 and 2008). He has also worked as a reporter of Olympic games four times. He is among the Bay Area’s most popular TV personalities and he anchors the nightly 5 pm, 6 pm and 11 pm News.  Raj hosts a popular television series titled ‘The Interview’ which interviews high profile newsmakers across the globe.
