Rahul Dholakia Biography

Rahul Dholakia is a successful film director from Bollywood who shot to fame after his National award winning film – Parzania in 2005, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika lead roles. Rahul received National Film Award for Best Direction and the movie gave National award for best actress to Sarika. Rahul has also made many documentary films. His upcoming release – Raees starring Shah Rukh Khan is one of the most awaited movies of the year and the movie is believed to be a crime drama with Pakistani actress Mahira Khan playing the female lead.

Rahul was born in Mumbai to Raksha and Parry Dholakia, an advertising professional. He has one elder sister. While at college, he started working with his father in advertising field. He also became a producer assistant for many documentary films and started making independent documentaries. In 1990 he moved to New York and completed Master’s in filmmaking from the New York Institute of Technology. Then he started working with documentaries and commercials in India and abroad.

He made his film debut with Kehtaa Hai Dil Baar Baar (2002), starring Kim Sharma and Jimmy Shergill. This English-Hindi bilingual was the first Bollywood film to completely shoot in America. But the movie was a flop and he took a break from the industry. He returned in a bang after a gap of three years with the highly acclaimed – Parzania, which got two National awards. He also directed one segment - Bombay Mumbai Same Shit in 2008 Anthology film - Mumbai Cutting. In 2009 movie Lamhaa received good critics’ response but was a flop. He took a long break from Bollywood and is to return back with Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees.
