Raghubar Das Biography

Raghubar Das is an Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party, who currently serves as the chief minister of Jharkhand. A former employee of Tata Steel, he served as the member of legislative assembly for five times. He represented Jamshedpur East constituency for all these 5 terms. Deputy Chief Minister and the minister of Urban Development Minister are the major positions held by him in state politics. He is the first non-tribal CM of the state.

He was born on May 3, 1955 to Chavan Ram, a labourer with a steel company. Jamshedpur, Bihar is his hometown. He is married to Rukmini Sunil, and the couple has two children. After Das completed graduation and LLB, he joined Tata Steel as a labourer. Since college days he was involved in politics and was jailed during Emergency period in 1975. He was an active participant in student agitation in 1974 supported by Jayaprakash Narayan, which later lead to Emergency period.

He joined Janata Party in 1977, and joined BJP as one of the founding members in 1980. He has been state BJP chief twice. The rise of BJP’s grass root worker to CM, Das has worked hard to reach the position where he is right now. He is the first non-tribal CM of his state, who is known to be a quick decision maker and a great party leader who is credited to growing the party inside the state. Membership has significantly increased within the state following his efforts.

A five time MLA, he became a minister of Jharkhand government for the first time in year 2000. He has been backing Sangh Parivar, and also worked with ABVP. When BJP secured majority in Jharkhand Legislative Assembly election, 2014, he became the sixth CM of Jharkhand. Though a popular leader, there are 8 serious criminal offences registered against Das.
