Rachana Banerjee is a popular film actress from Kolkata, West Bengal. She has worked in Odia, Bengali and Telugu films. She was most active in the 1990s, playing lead roles in both Bengali and south Indian films. She also remained a successful model in the first half of 1990s and won Miss Kolkata 1994 beauty pageant. In Miss India 1994, she won Miss Beautiful Smile sub title. She has won 5 beauty pageants from India, and remained a busy model-actress in the 1990s. She was earlier married to actor-politician Siddhanta Mahapatra, and they divorced in 2004. Later she married Probal Basu. In Bengali movies, she was frequently paired with Prosenjit Chatterjee, and they worked together in 35 films.

Rachana Banerjee was born on 2nd October 1974 in Kolkata, West Bengal. She is a single child to her parents. Her original name is Jhumjhum Banerjee. She was rechristened Rachana by Bengali Director Sukhen Das who casted her in 1994 film, Daan Pratidaan, her debut film. After that she used the screen name, Rachana Banerjee in the film industry. Started her professional career as a model, she won Miss Kolkata 1994 contest, and very soon she marked her film debut with Bengali films.

She remained one of the top actresses of 1990s and early 2000s. She acted 35 films with the top actor of 1990s, Prosenjit Chatterjee. She also appeared in one Bollywood film, Sooryavamsham starring Amitabh Bachchan, the remake of Tamil flick with the same name. She played the role of Gauri, who rejects her marriage with Amitabh Bachchan, as he was illiterate. She has also done Tamil and Telugu movies, apart from Odia. Banerjee has also hosted the popular Bengali non-fiction TV show, Didi No. 1.
