Rabin Mondal Biography

Rabin Mondal is an Indian artist and painter from Howrah, West Bengal. He is one of the founding members of Calcutta Painters, an organization dedicated to artists of Bengal. He kept a low profile throughout his life, and earned a late recognition only in 2005 when retrospective exhibitions of his works were exhibited in Kolkata, New Delhi and Bombay. Then only he came to spotlight. His works are now found in The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Osians Art Archive, Mumbai, The Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata and many other art galleries, including one in Dubai.

His full name is Rabindra Nath Mondal. He is best known to art world as Rabin Mondal. A native of Howrah in West Bengal, he was born into a business family. Many of his family members were rich businessmen, intellectuals and also served as Diwan and other administrative positions in princely states. This Mondal family had a highly educated and upper-middle-class background. Though he was born into a rich family, he got stuck with the poor living conditions of slums and lower sections of the society and later he portrayed them on canvas. Since young he was deeply touched by realities of life and its struggles.

Rabin was deeply affected by the Bengal famine of 1943, India’s independence movement and the partition of his own East Bengal into a new nation. Such thoughts inspired him in his paintings. He became one of the "Group of Eight" artists in the 1960s who worked to promote modernist art throughout India. Some of his works had an obvious cubist influence and is also known as an expressionist.
