R. Vedavalli Biography 
R. Vedavalli, also addressed as Vedavalli is a veteran Carnatic vocalist from Tamil Nadu. She was born in Mannargudi, Tiruvallur district, and currently one of the most senior artists of Carnatic music. She served in the Teacher's College of Music of the Madras Music Academy for several years and later at Government College of Music Adyar, where she served as a professor of vocal music. She has trained numerous students throughout her professional life. She now lives in Chennai with her husband and mother.
R. Vedavalli was born in Mannargudi, Tamil Nadu. Ramaswami Iyengar and Padmasani Ammal were her parents. Her talent as a singer was first spotted by Madurai Srirangam Iyengar. He later bought a harmonium and gave her music lessons as well. When the family moved to Chennai, she continued with her training in music. She was trained by renowned musician and artist Mudicondan Venkatarama Iyer while at Chennai. She also regularly participated in music competitions winning many prizes. At a young age she received All India Radio's first prize for Classical Music and Light Classical Music, and the award was handed over by President of India.
She was honoured with Sangeetha Kalanidhi by Madras Music Academy in year 2000. In 1995 she received Sangeetha Kalasikhamani honour. She was also a recipient of Central Government scholarship which helped her to take advanced learning in other forms of music. Apart from Carnatic vocals, she is also trained in Veena musical instrument. She is married to D. R. Santhanam, and currently lives in Chennai. When she was 18 years old, her live concert was heard by Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar who suggested her to become a professional vocalist. During her active years she has performed in many foreign countries.
