R. Radhakrishnan (politician) Biography

R. Radhakrishnan is a noted AINRC leader and politician from Pondicherry. A parliamentarian, he got elected to Lok Sabha in 2014 general assembly elections. He defeated noted congress leader V. Narayanasamy in the Lok Sabha elections by a huge margin of over 60,000 votes. A prominent leader in state politics too, Radhakrishnan served as speaker of the Union Territory of Puducherry (2006-2011). He is a noted politician associated with the regional party, All India N R Congress. Prior to his entry to AINRC, he was associated with Indian National Congress.

He was born in Poudouthottame of  Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu on 9 June 1971. He was born into a family with political lineage. His father R Ramanathan is a former MLA from Pondicherry constituency. His school education was completed at Cuddalore and later he moved to Chennai to do his Pre-degree course. Later he completed MBA from PSG Institute of Management in Coimbatore. He entered active politics with early 2000s, and got elected to state assembly for the first time in 2001. He successfully contested in the next state assembly elections conducted in 2006, and with 2014 Lok Sabha elections he became a parliamentarian.

He served as Chairman of Puducherry Slum Clearance Board from 2001-2006. During his second tenure as MLA, he served as Speaker. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, AINRC formed an alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party. The long pending demand of statehood to Puducherry was one of the reasons for his party’s alliance with the BJP. During his tenure as Chairman of Pondicherry Slum Clearance Board, he announced Rs 25-crore housing scheme for the poor. 7-acre site in Reddiarpalayam was used for this scheme.
